God Ideas - God Wants to Spend Time with Me

Summary: We were created for companionship with the Trinity. God wants to spend all of eternity with us, including right now, in God’s kingdom.

Your friends are outside your kingdom

Our first-grader is becoming aware of the fallibility of friendships. Girls who were friends in kindergarten sometimes want to play with her. Sometimes they want to play with others. They haven’t stopped wanting our daughter as a friend, but they have other friends too.

Our daughter is also newly aware that her parents have parts of their lives that do not include her. Business, housework, friendships, and intimate time prevent her from having our constant attention. While she has noticed that her parents and her friends do not always prefer her company, our daughter has not yet noticed that there are times she does not prefer ours!

He is always near you and with you; leave Him not alone. You would think it rude to leave a friend alone who came to visit you; why, then, must God be neglected?

– Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

Learning that one’s friends have other friends, and that one’s parents have lives outside of oneself, is part of growing up. This is part of a child’s learning the boundaries of her “kingdom.” Her kingdom is her sphere of influence; it is the conditions under which what she says goes. Children who do not learn the boundaries of their kingdoms become self-centered, resentful adults, so it’s a good thing to learn. Part of humility is knowing there is a ruler of the universe, and you are not it.

God’s friends are within God’s kingdom

God is the ruler of the universe. The boundaries of God’s kingdom are completely within God’s control. Unlike human beings, God doesn’t need to enforce boundaries. God doesn’t get distracted by business, housework, or other friendships. God doesn’t prefer one friend’s company over another. In fact, human beings were created as companions to God. Our purpose is to be in relationship with God, living in God’s kingdom. We are created to be part of the community of the Trinity, joining in relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit now and always.

You are an unceasing spiritual being, created for an intimate and transforming friendship with the creative Community that is the Trinity.

– Dallas Willard, Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God

God never wishes you would go entertain yourself. God never gets tired of you. God delights in you. God wants to spend time with you, just because you are you.  If you spend time with God, really seek God out, you’ll discover that you want to spend time in the company of the Trinity, too. Just because.

God has created us for intimate friendship with himself, both now and forever.
